Bass & Viola
After an excess of music exams and Brandenburg concertos Phil escaped the classical scene. Influenced by the "Dunedin sound" he slipped into the indie world with some school mates, picking up the electric bass and joining the four-piece Yorkie and the Bricklayer. A few years later, with a burgeoning interest in jazz harmony, Phil joined a jazz trio in Hamilton (NZ), with a regular spot at a local cafe.
More recently, a renewed focus on the bass has seen Phil explore his indie roots while also diving into genres such as soul, R&B, latin, reggae, funk and hip-hop. Following the tradition set by many players including the legendary James Jamerson, Phil enjoys the deep thud of flat wound strings on the precision bass which fits perfectly into the soul and R&B tones of Chapter 4.
Keyboards
Doug’s first band, The Gordon Bennet, played original songs he wrote with the guitarist but never quite achieved its goal of becoming the Beatles with a Stravinsky flavour. Since then he’s played in numerous others which have provided many highlights: playing Deep Purple tunes on a flatbed truck at a bikie club family day, with wet t-shirt competitions between sets....... literally rocking the hundred-year-old floor of Ballarat’s Lydiard Hotel in a sixties cover band......attempting to play jazz fusion in a band of eastern European emigres whose common language was broken English. And now the next Chapter.....
Drums
Michael started playing drums in 1980 for the high school band who needed a drummer for the music class and musicals and the bug was caught.
Mostly self-taught, the periods of instruction from excellent drum teachers included one who played with Frank Zappa. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s, there were Jazz bands, Big bands and session musician recordings that progressed to undertaking the Head of Music roles for a number of music schools.
All that took its toll and eventually he retired to pursue a career in IT.
Bring on 2019, the decision was made to rekindle the passion for music and drumming. After 2 years of seemingly never-ending work to get his chops back and progress back to a level of performance. In 2020, Michael auditioned for some other bands however, upon meeting the talented members of the now Chapter4 band, Michael has found a new musical home.
Vocals
Paula has fronted bands in the pub and club scene around Canberra and Townsville, and now trying out the Melbourne scene.
Belting out a rock song or ballad was fun, but turning to more 'Sunday Sesh' style music with the talented Chapter 4 musicians has set the challenge.
